Nelson was a scholar, educator and administrator for the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church, with the majority of his work being done in East Asia, especially Japan. His excellence gave him fluency in Japanese and a wealth of understanding of the Japanese culture and religion.
Together with making a major contribution to the founding of Japan Mission College (now: Saniku Gakuin) and other institutions, he was head of the SDA Mission in Japan and wrote one of the most authoritative Kanji (Japanese language characters) dictionaries available.
Completed in 1938, the thesis is a rare, comprehensive research papers of Japanese religious history. It will provide the reader with an understanding which not many around the world would have, even the Japanese.
